My take on zombie games.

Well after a long hiatus Im back. Sorry about that wait, lot of personal stuff.

Anywho lets go.

ZOMBIE!! (Video Games)

So over the last couple years there have been many video games centered around the whole Zombie, AKA Living Dead, AKA Walking Dead, AKA Animated Dead, AKA….you get the idea.  So the following is my opinion and view on them, at least SOME of them.

We will start off with the most popular game at the moment, DayZ (Dean Hall-creator, Bohemia Interactive-developer) [PC]. Now this started off as a user mod to Arma II and took off like a jet until the developer themselves went to the user and bought the rights and gave funding (assumed) to make this into a standalone title. Now here is a game that is in VERY early alpha stages, sold over 2 million copies so far and has fluctuated in the top 3 best sellers on Steam Store. My take on this? Waste. Now dont get me wrong the idea is great, the heart is/was there but its not anywhere near playable. There are so many bugs, so many features not implemented.  It has become more of who can find a rifle and ammo the fastest to kill the other players rather than surviving and killing the zombies. Not to meantion that EVERYTHING in the world is in Russian language(not UI).  Add in the huge gameplay bugs like the zombies running super speed, moving while standing still and glitching through walls and floors, I give this a pass at least for a LONG while.

Next up is The Walking Dead (Telltale Games) [Multi-Console, PC, Mobile, iOS, Android]. Here is a game based off the comic book / tv show of the same name. Idea here is you play a different character in the same universe as the comic and show on occasion you see a character cameo.  This is a very basic control game where you have limited interactions and more of a pick your action and see the affect game. This is actually a very solid game full of action, suspense and excitement. Only downside is that it is broken up into episodes not a whole game. You can buy the season pass which the equivalent to buying the whole game. The game just started its sequel (Season 2). Definitely a play.

{no stock boxart or title screen yet}

Lets talk about upcoming MMO called H1Z1 (SOE) [PS4, PC]. The name is a play off the H1N1 virus as they changed it to Z for Zombies. Ha…Ha. Ok so the name is cheezy but from the videos that came come out since its announcement in April it has come along nicely I feel. This is similar to DayZ in regards to you are thrown into the zombie infested world and object is to survive. Big difference is this is WAY farther along in much less time than DayZ is. Also H1Z1 will be free-to-play. Sony has also stated the game will NOT be selling guns, ammo or food. That would spoil the fun wouldnt (THE SHAME those of you who are mad about this must feel).  They just allowed press (reviewers mostly) to play a Pre-Alpha game test before the E3 reveal. I have high hopes on this one.

Alright so those are pretty much the top 3 zombie games right now. Some good some bad. All in all? I STILL dont understand or really like Zombies. Why the fuss? Makes no sense to me but hey its the fad right now. So you asked why do I play them. Well one is a good game anyways, the others I am desperate for a survival living life kind of game, if that means dealing with zombies, so be it.

Honorable game mentions: Zombie Nation, CoD Black Ops Zombies, Dead Island, The Last of Us, Left 4 Dead, Zombie Apocalypses,  and Dead Rising.

SWTOR Address

WHASSSSSSUUUUUPPPPPP INTERNET!?!?!?! Fore I am Chase Hammer, you may call me…Chase Hammer. From the long long time ago in a galaxy far far away I bring you my STATE OF THE UNION STAR WARS THE OLD REPUBLIC ADDRESS! (echo echo echo)

Alright so if you havent guessed I am an SWTOR player. In fact ever since I started playing this game back in May 2012 Im in L-O-V-E with this game. Now here is a little background on me and MMOs. In the past, I absolutely did not, without a doubt, no inkling of a thought, wanted anything to do with Massively Multiplayer Online games. In fact I thought anyone that paid $15+ a month on a game was absolutely insane. I even vowed to never ever NEVER EVER pay to play a game more than my initial purchase. Yeah well….about 2011 I thought eh why not try it and played World of Warcraft. Yep I tried it and well I liked it…anyways im not here to talk about WoW. Fast forward a year and SWTOR was released without me really hearing about it, well thats not true I had heard of it but never really cared enough to find out what it was after all I was an avid anti-mmo guy and I had just really gotten hooked on WoW. I actually was stuck in a contract in WoW for a year so I couldnt leave even if I wanted to. Anywho so fast forward again and Bioware finally releases a trial version of SWTOR and I try it out. Can you say HELLO? Because now Im exposed to 1) Star Wars which I have always loved. 2) Fully voiced quests and characters. Let me say that again FULLY VOICED QUESTS AND CHARACTERS! Yeah totally blew my mind on what a MMO could accomplish. So after my year subscription with WoW expired I cancelled. I purchased the full game of SWTOR at the store the same day and havent looked back.

So blah blah blah fast forward to present day. SWTOR just pre-released its next “expansion” so the game. I quote expansion because that is what Bioware/EA call it. I will get more to that in a minute. Now if you were subscribed before the beginning of the month Bioware was gracious enough to let those players get early access to the Galactic Starfighter “expansion.” (They there are those sneaky quotation marks again. hmmm) The actual release for everyone, mostly free-to-play players, is February 2014. So after Rise of the Hutt Cartel was released earlier this year it added a whole new chapter (#4) to the characters main class missions. Well now you see why I am using the word expansion loosely. You see GS has added a new feature rather than expanded the game. This is basically a new PVP mode but adds nothing more. No level cap increase, no additional story quests, no new items…ok well that isnt exactly true There are new fighter suit equipment (2 suit sets for each Empire and Republic) but other than that no new items. All this “expansion” does is add free-form player vs player warzone space battles. You start off with two different ships (not your normal characters story ship) each of which is a different attack  Yeah yeah well you can go HERE to learn more about that if you wish. Im not going to go into it because I feel this should be A PART of an expansion but how they can say this is a full blown expansion to the game is beyond my comprehension. HERE is everything that ROTHC had for comparison. You see where ROTHC was a true expansion, GS is quite frankly something that was rushed out in hopes to gain a few more subscriptions by the end of the year. At least that is MY stance on the matter, yours might be different.

 Ok ok ok I will say that while GS in not an expansion in my eyes it is quite fun mode addition. You now have full out space battles with other players and for the first time in space you have FULL CONTROL of your ship movement. Slow down, go faster, flip the afterburners or full stop, its up to you unlike standard space missions where you automatically progress forward and all you do is maneuver around objects. You are able to customize your starfighter with different paint, different addons and equipment which will alter its performance and look.

 End all I welcome any and all additional content to the game but I cant sit here and say I wasnt disappointed in what wasnt included (ie. more story progression and character development). I feel that this might be a step towards what I really wish for the game. Free-form space travel and exploration/interaction. There you have it my first state of SWTOR address. I hope you liked my read. I will be back soon with more writings on whats on my mind at the time.

Peace Out.
